Episode 25 Nightmare

Hello! And welcome to the twenty-fifth episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and Lizbeth Myles (Big Finish, Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter.

In Nightmare, there is, in fact, a nightmare. Hurrah! It’s quite a good one too, and by good, I mean scary. Mostly though we’re in the real world and enjoying a classy black and white thriller. About driving people mad. As you do.

Episode 24 Paranoiac

Hello! And welcome to the twenty-fourth episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and Lizbeth Myles (Big Finish, Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter.

In 1964’s Paranoiac, Oliver Reed returns for Jimmy Sangster’s final shot at a moody suspense thriller. It has a lot to say about the advantages of being an aunt’s favourite nephew. Not least of all the fact that she’ll make a really scary mask and pretend to be your dead brother. But she’s helping (no, really, she’s actually trying to help.) And if the plot doesn’t al quite hang together, Oliver Reed does a marvellous job of distracting you from it with his acting skills.

Episode 23 Kiss of the Vampire

Hello! And welcome to the twenty-third episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and Lizbeth Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter.

A Hammer horror vampire film with neither Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee? Is that allowed? Apparently so. Is it any good? Yes, yes it is. If only for the pretty dresses and masked ball. And the absinthe. It’s probably absinthe. It’s green anyway.

Episode 22 Maniac

maniac1963

Hello! And welcome to the twenty-second episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and Lizbeth Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter.

In 1963’s Maniac (also known as *The* Maniac), we journey to France, and fine scenery, and a surprising array of animals (turkeys!). Alas, while one might expect from the title they’re about to enjoy a fast-paced thrilling horror, this is not the case. Thank goodness there are pretty shots where you can see people horse-riding across the beach. One of us was more impressed by this movie than the other, but not by the end of the podcast. Liz feels very guilty about this.

Episode 21 The Damned

damned

Hello! And welcome to the twenty-first episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and Lizbeth Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter.

The month we’re off to see 1963’s The Damned, which is in many ways too films smooshed together. Neither of them are horror. Sorry about that. But one is very John Wyndam, hurrah!
