Episode 18 The Shadow of the Cat

shadowofthecat

Hello! And welcome to the eighteenth episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and Lizbeth Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter.

Cats! Aren’t they wonderful? And just to show how wonderful they are, Hammer made a whole film about their loyalty, tenacity, intelligence, and profound sense of justice. It’s not the cat’s fault the humans keep having the same conversation over and over again, which is perhaps not the most entertaining choice that could have been made. But Barbara Shelley and Andre Morell are there to try and make things better. They don’t always succeed, but they try dammit.

fiendface

The seventeenth bonus episode of Hammer House of Podcast is up now!

Bonus Episode 16 The Uncanny

uncanny

The sixteenth bonus episode of Hammer House of Podcast is up now!

This month we return to the not!Amicus portmanteau films with a feature that tries to do for cats what Jaws did for sharks. Fortunately, it doesn’t succeed because cats are adorable and beautiful and, really, kind of right through most of the film. Also, Peter Cushing is here. Hurrah!

Episode 16 Taste of Fear

scream-of-fear-aka-taste-of-fear-everett

Hello! And welcome to the sixteenth episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and Lizbeth Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter.

This episode we’re joined by documentary-maker Chris Chapman for the delightful horror-thriller A Taste of Fear. After the last Hammer thiller, there was some trepidation approaching this one, but Jimmy Sangster rarely disappoints. A Taste of Fear is a gorgeous movie, one that we’re slightly bewildered isn’t more well known, and if you haven’t seen we advise you to try and give it a watch before listening to the podcast. So often the final act of a horror or a thriller can leave you feeling disappointed and unsatisfied, but A Taste of Fear is so very keen that that doesn’t happen, and is very much worth going into entirely unspoiled.

Bonus Episode 15 Frightmare

frightmare.21192

The fifteenth bonus episode of Hammer House of Podcast is up now!

This month we return to our Patreon requests with 1974’s Frightmare. Now, that poster may have made us a little nervous. We like our nice, cosy, Gothic horror, and this one has a rather disturbed lady with a drill in it. However, as it turned out, it was pretty great. And the more we talked about it, the more I really appreciated how great it was.

As this is a Patrons only episode, and a thank you for supporting our podcast, it’s only available on Patreon and not our regular podcast feed. This, and all previous bonus episodes, are available to all new Patrons for as little as $1 a month.

Bonus Episode 14 Tales That Witness Madness

talesthatwitnessmadness

The fourteenth bonus episode of Hammer House of Podcast is up now!

This month we’re back to the portmanteaus, and while this may look suspiciously like an Amicus feature, it’s not. But it’s just as spiffy, and has four delightful macabre tales where we learn important things like tigers are dangerous, don’t bring weird-looking trees indoors, and creepy men can also secretly be cannibals. Hurrah!

As this is a Patrons only episode, and a thank you for supporting our podcast, it’s only available on Patreon and not our regular podcast feed. This, and all previous bonus episodes, are available to any new Patrons for as little as $1 a month.

Episode 14 The Two Faces of Dr Jekyll

TwoFaces.jpg

Hello! And welcome to the fourteenth episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and Lizbeth Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter.

In this month’s Hammer House of Podcast, we reach 1960’s The Two Faces of Dr Jekyll. Don’t let the title fool you, there’s only one face, but it comes in bearded and clean-shaven version. Marvel at how both Jekyll and Hyde are awful people! Delight that Christopher Lee has a real proper acting part that he’s very good at! And despair at the endless can-can scenes!
